James Mason Hutchings (1820-1902) spent much of his life in and around Yosemite and the high Sierra and was instrumental in promoting Yosemite Valley as a tourist destination. His "In the Heart of the Sierras" was the crowning achievement of his career as a writer and publisher. The extra plate - "The Sierras from Glacier Point", a "photo-typo" by Britton and Rey after a photograph by George Fiske is found at page 470, opposite the correct plate "Key to the High Sierra from Glacier Point Hotel." Currey & Kruska 175; Farquhar 18d. Front joint neatly split from top to bottom though board is held firmly in place by sewing cords and cloth inner hinge, lettering pieces chipped, brief Christmas 1900 gift inscription to back of Hutchings' portrait, else near fine.
