8vo, 19.5x12cm. "Written originally in French by Msr. Cl. Fleury, Praeceptor to Monseigneur de Vermandois; and to the Dukes of Burgundy and Anjou." Translation of 'Les moeurs des Chrétiens' originally published Paris 1682. The history and practices of the early Christians c30-600AD, in four parts:- the manners of the Christians of Jerusalem to the destruction of the city / the time of persecution over three centuries / the state of the Church in its liberty / the changes it underwent afterwards. Title-page with double-ruled border. pp(16)346(6) with preface, errata opposite page 1, marginal notes, table of contents, and three pages of publisher advertisements. Edges of text-block red-speckled. Original full panelled calf. Spine with five raised bands and blindstamped rules & decorations. Boards with blindstamped panels and ruled borders. Original endpapers. Spine rubbed, chipped with loss at head and tail, and missing title-label. Hinges rubbed, with open splits from heads to tails. Boards a little rubbed over surfaces and along edges, a little pitted within inner panels, a little worn at corners, and a little worm-affected in form of:- a few small patches of minor surface-grazing on both front and rear boards / penetration of hide down to board along two short trails and at a few spots on front board / and penetration of hide down to board at two spots on rear board. Front board also loosened, held by only two of five cords. Endpapers split along hinges. Front endpapers faintly & patchily toned and faintly dust-marked; flyleaf with owner's name and date (1861) on recto and two recent 2-line pencil inscriptions on verso (facing title-page). Child's pencil doodle close to upper edge of rear pastedown, and short pencil inscription, possibly in the same hand, at head of first page of table of contents (facing page 346); both in heavy hand, but partially erased and not too obtrusive. Title-page a little dust-marked. One leaf of preface missing roughly-rectangular segment from margins at lower outer corner, a little nicked at fore-edge, and with fore-edge margin at recto dust-soiled to width up to 1.5cm from fore-edge; two other pages of preface dust-soiled to lesser extent along fore-edges, and two pages lightly dust-marked in lower margins. Contents otherwise here & there lightly toned and/or lightly & sparsely spotted, and with a few creased and/or furled corner tips. Top edge of text-block dust-marked and quite deeply darkened, other edges toned and a little dust- & handling-marked. Binding requiring attention, but of reasonable appearance and still holding.
