Large 8vo. 7 x 10.25 inches. xv + 192 pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in original brown cloth over buff, gilt. Deckled edges. Light wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine, browning of fly leaves and scattered light foxing, largely confined to margins; otherwise a very good copy. 1920 signature on front pastedown. Illustrated by 24 colour plates, with printed guard pages, including frontispiece and by 50 pages of black and white photographic plates, containing 89 figures. Well illustrated historical account of English earthen and stoneware. William Burton (1863-1941) was employed as a chemist at the Wedgwood Etruria works, but became a director of the newly founded Pilkington's Tile and Pottery C. Ltd., Manchester, 1891 (until 1915). Here he oversaw the production of fine pottery in the ancient Chinese and Persian styles, employing a creative team of designers.
