Beschreibung
Whittaker, 1836, 2nd edition with considerable additions, and a new preface developing the system of the Port Wine trade, 8½ x 5½ inches, xlviii + 423 pages, publisher's catalogue (16 pages) dated January 1837 tipped-in after the fly-leaf, ERIC QUAYLE'S COPY WITH HIS BOOKPLATE (see NOTE 2 below) on the inside front cover, original cloth with the original spine (lacking small portions at the head and tail) relaid, small slight discoloured patches at the top of the front and rear covers, corners bumped, shelf wear along the lower edges, front and rear inner hinges repaired (front repair untidily), tiny piece of the front paste-down missing at the top of the repair, tiny piece of the lower corner of the second blank missing, some small slight brown blotching on a few leaves, pin hole through the blank margins of about 10 leaves (probably due to the book having been closed on something small and sharp), otherwise overall a tight and clean copy. NOTE 1: In the preface to this second edition, pp xxvii - xliii, Redding expands in detail on his remarks on "Oporto wines" made in the first edition in response to criticisms from "individuals interested in the Port wine trade (who) have considered he has done injustice to the merits of this wine." NOTE 2: "Eric Stanley Quayle (1921-2001) was a noted British bibliophile, collector, historian and author" (Wikipedia). The books he wrote included "Old Cook Books: An Illustrated History" 1978.
