xx,407pp., including in-text illustrations, plus frontispiece, additional engraved titlepage, folding map, and five plates. Contemporary embossed brown cloth, spine gilt. Light shelf wear to boards, some worming to cloth. Scattered foxing and soiling, offsetting from plates. Contemporary ownership inscription on front free endpaper (see below). Very good overall. This copy belonged to the important early missionary and medical doctor, Dwight Baldwin, and bears his ownership inscription (dated 1844) on the front free endpaper. Baldwin came to Hawaii in 1832 and is credited with shepherding Maui through several epidemics of whooping cough, measles, and smallpox with considerably less suffering than on the neighboring islands. "An early and important non-missionary- produced history of the Islands" - Forbes. Jarves traces the history and culture of the islands from the early period, including Hawaiian mythology and traditional origin stories, the visit of Cook in 1778, the influx of missionaries in the 1820s and 30s, and even the Provisional Cession which occurred just shortly before publication. The book is decorated with in-text illustrations and plates, which are a combination of original works and illustrations adapted from those made on Cook's third voyage. Jarves was the founder and editor of the POLYNESIAN, one of Hawaii's earliest weekly newspapers - a position which gave him access to period documents which he used in preparing this as well as several other books on Hawaii and its history. He is also credited with authoring what Forbes describes as "the first full-length piece of fiction with a Hawaiian setting," and is otherwise known for his impressive collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, which he traded to Yale University as collateral on a loan. A nice association copy of this important and early secular history of Hawaii. FORBES 1410. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 43-2767. SABIN 35796. DAB IX, p.381. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers WRCAM57600
