Cloth rubbed and stained, spine extremities chipping, small hole in cloth on spine, losing a few letters of spine title, joints cracked but holding. Lacking both endpapers, light tanning and staining, tear to center of p.243, touching text but without loss. Good plus. A thorough history of Seneca County, Ohio, by the prolific historian, Consul W. Butterfield. Butterfield's history includes much general information on the settlement of Ohio and relations with the Seneca Indians, particularly regarding their forced westward migration. Butterfield also includes an account of the infamous Simon Girty, the most feared man on the Ohio frontier, including his 1777 attack on Fort Henry. "2,000 copies were printed, but 1,300 were destroyed by fire in a warehouse in Tifflin, Ohio, 1849. The title continues: Geographical Descriptions, Early Customs, Biographical Sketches, &c. &c. with an Introduction Containing A Brief History of the State, from the Discovery of the Mississippi River Down to the Year 1817, to the Whole of Which is Added An Appenxix, Containing Tabular Views., &c. Rebound in red cloth. A very good copy except as noted. Foxing throughout. Penciled notations on both side of front end page and also the rear. Done in pencil and almost impossible to read now. Some staining along the edge but not affecting the text. Interesting ownership: Originally this book belonged to J. J. Peterson in 1863. It was passed on to his son Earl Peterson who was living in Gahon, Ohio in 1959 and was about 75 years of age at the time. It was given to Harold H. Faine by Earl Peteson on 11-27-58.
