The former owner of the book, George E. Davis, a member of the regiment, was a Medal of Honor recipient for action during the July 9, 1864, Battle of Monocacy near Frederick, Maryland. On that day, Davis commanded a small Union detachment at Monocacy Junction that was able to hold its position. They managed to fend off repeated Confederate assaults while guarding two bridges, despite being outnumbered. REFERENCES: DORN V72; NEVINS I pg 102: :"As the subtitle states, the 1870 edition was enlarged by additional biographical sketches and enhanced with five dozen illustrations; only minor revisions were made in the text." COULTER 222: "This author wrote of little besides marching and fighting and camp life, with occasional descriptions of villages and town through which he marched. Among these were Warrenton, Winchester, and especially Charlestown, where John Brown was executed. Here the army song 'John Brown's Body' and the bands added to the noise as they marched through. The Tenth Regiment entered the war in 1862 and fought through to Appomattox. In the summer of 1864 its was sent from the James to Baltimore to aid in repelling Early's attack on Washington."
