This SCARCE 504 pp. book is subtitled, " . Being a Complete and Authentic Description of the Columbian Exposition From Its Inception". The large volume is profusely illustrated with engravings made from photographs and drawings of exhibits in the various departments. There is a prior owner's name atop the first blank flyleaf. The front board is gloriously embossed with World's Fair designs. This copy was in a library, ALTHOUGH NOT a public lending library. It is stamped "Ursuline Motherhouse Library" on the bottom of the Table of Contents page and on the page edges (only seen when book is closed). There are NO OTHER library stampings. Just inside the rear board is a roughed area where a pocket was, and a different stamped address is just inside the front board. There is a tape reinforced front internal gutter, and a nice new attractive textured Black-taped spine. The boards have normal soiling and bumped corners like virtually all 131 year old books, but all told it presents well and rates Very Good minus. The large volume is profusely illustrated with engravings made from photographs and drawings of exhibits in the various departments. Other than a prior owner's name atop the first blank flyleaf, the book internally is pristine & unmarked. The boards are gloriously embossed with World's Fair designs, BUT the spine is chipped at the top AND is missing the bottom 2" exposing the paper underlayment, PLUS the front spine edge -- top to bottom, is very rough. The book has normal bumped corners as a 131 year old book would, and it is perfectly handleable and readable. It is a classic, printed by several companies. Truman, a distinguished correspondent for the NY Times during the Civil War and author, among other works of a classic study on dueling, is the author of this history of the Columbian Exposition, better known now as the Chicago World's Fair. The book covers in detail every aspect of the Exposition from its origin as an idea for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America; the innovative use of electric lighting for the first time at such an event; the assassination of Carter Harrison, the World's Fair Mayor, to its closing on Oct. 30, 1893, and its record-breaking attendance. First Edition Thus (several publishers produced editions of this book). About 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches, 610 pages in light blue cloth-covered boards with a complex pictorial design in red and gold on the front cover and spine. Frontispiece of the Fair grounds and numerous photo-engraved reproductions of the Fair's exhibits and events. Boards show moderate edge and surface wear and light soiling. Spine ends are slightly frayed and color has faded though gilt lettering and decoration on front and spine is intact. All hinges are intact, binding is firm. Text edges show moderate soiling and foxing; previous owner's signature on front end page. Text is clean, complete and unmarked, no tearing or creasing. A very decent copy of this account of a major historic event. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Elaborately illustrated and embossed blue clothbound without a dustjacket. Large-format and heavy- some shipping destinations may require extra postage. Crisp color and embossed edges; remarkable exterior presentation. Only flaw to book are two bumps, to top and bottom of spine (top spine has light tear to cloth).
