Illustrates various kinds of people, fauna, flora, landscape, the past, grotesque, technology, architecture, landscape, animals, birds, costume, folk customs, daily life of the commoners, occupations, furniture and all other genres. Many of the drawings and designs found their way into Netsuke, Ojime and other Japanese art work. . This is a miscellany of various subjects, drawn in Hokusai's unique and humorous style, demanding a chuckle from the reader. . *** CONTENTS OF THIS VOLUME: This volume has substantial Samurai, military and martial activities, showing weapons and some battle scenes. . Begins with a double-page scenic view of Mt. Fuji and a Samurai fortified position, ingenious folding bridge to pass over castle moats, ladders, insignias, look-out posts, fierce Samurai & military battles, arms, armor, weapons, swords, horse-mounted Samurai in lightning & rain. . The royal princess, two ladies playing stringed instruments: Koto [Japanese Harp], Shamisen [a kind of 4 string instrument]. Sumo wrestlers, a double-page illustration of a Sumo wrestler engaged in several activities: bathing in a wooden tub, carrying water in wooden buckets, cooling off with a fan after the bath, preparing a fish, eating grinding sesame seeds, preparing Sake [rice wine] & others. . Bailing rice and drumming the Taiko [large wood drum with animal skin]. . Ambush by a ruffian on an unsuspecting water bearing woman. On a sultry day she walks with her Kimono open revealing her breasts. A common form of rural rape. . Drawing of a Dutchman. Warriors in armor making smoke signals. . Drawings of rain, rain clouds, thunder, lightning. A single Samurai making smoke signals by the sea, marvelous wave patterns. Remote mountain temple/shrine. A Ronin [master less Samurai] warrior at rest leaning against a buffalo holding his Wakizashi [long sword]. A Samurai views a previous battleground with manly skulls. Two horse-riding Samurai brave a hail of arrows while running the gauntlet. A Buddhist procession, in celebration of a successful battle, giving thanks. . *** JAPAN'S MOST FAMOUS ARTIST: KATSUSHIKA Hokusai [1760-1849] was lovingly called the "Mad Man on Drawing." . He was the best portrayer of Edo period [1604-1868] life, culture, art, customs and impressions of Japan and Japanese life. He remains the most respected and skilled artist of his time. His sense of humor, capturing the true nature of the commoners, their life style, furniture, weapons, farming activities, architecture and pastimes. General description: The book is bound in the original publisher's blind-stamped stitched stiff wrappers, with red title slip. The impression & registry are excellent, colors vivid. . Not all copies came with the border-printed title page. . The covers are a bit dusty as usual, with typical minor extremities and corner wear, minimal impact, with a few blemishes. . The contents is fresh, worm-hole free, clean and solid. . The title page is outlined with indigo-blue dragon borders, not all copies have this feature. . The images are strong with excellent registry, delicately colored in Sumi, gray, pink and black colors, entirely woodblock printed on hand-made Washi paper. The paper as usual is a bit 'toned' as can be expected for a book nearly 150 years old. . By and large a much better than average example, contents fresh. Good ima.
