Books: 142 x 80 mm. (5 5/8 x 3 1/8"). Box: 162 x 99 mm. (6 3/8" x 3 3/4"). Two volumes. LOVELY CONTEMPORARY MAROON STRAIGHT-GRAINED MOROCCO, covers with blind-tooled border and gilt romantic-style frame, raised bands, spine compartments with decorative gilt frames, gilt lettering, gilt-ruled turn-ins, all edges gilt. IN THE ORIGINAL MATCHING LEATHER BOX SHAPED LIKE A BOOK, with similar gilt and blind decoration, small paper ticket inside box reading "Sold by Duffield, 12 Milsom St., Bath." Common Prayer with engraved frontispiece showing a family leaving church. Titles each with the ink inscription "Mary Lloyd's book a gift from her grandmother" and [in different ink] "Eliz[abeth] Francis 1831"; endpaper of Bible with the name of "[indecipherable] Hall / Wales" written ink. â THE BINDINGS IN NEAR PRISTINE CONDITION with just a hint of rubbing to upper cover of Bible, front free endpaper neatly removed from each volume, light foxing to endleaves, otherwise THE CONTENTS IN VERY FINE CONDITION, obviously seldom (if ever) opened. This beautiful set, in the original ingenious box, is in the virtually perfect state of preservation one would expect for a treasured family heirloom. The Bible and Book of Common Prayer show no signs of devotional (or other) use, and seem to have been removed from their box almost not at all. The quality of the materials, design, and workmanship are certainly equal to those seen in bindings produced by Robert Riviere, and it certainly seems possible that this is an early example of his work: he would have been in the right place at the right time, establishing his celebrated and long-lived bindery in Bath in 1829, and staying on for 11 years before relocating to London. Fair-Good original full calf, rubbed, extremities worn, ffep missing, some discolouration - mostly to preliminary pages, also towards end of Bible segment & throughout the New Version of the Psalms, not affecting text. 12 pages are mising from II Samuel, 8 pages in II Corinthians have been torn at top edge, affecting top line of text, 4 pages in Revelation have been torn, with some some loss of text. Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. A beautifully presented two volume set of the Holy Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. Both volumes uniformly bound in burgundy leatherette, with matching endpapers. Yapped and bevelled edges. All edges gilt. Silk ribbon markers bound in. The Bible has a colour plate frontispiece and seven further colour plate illustrations. The Book of Common Prayer has a colour plate frontispiece and five further colour plate illustrations. The Bible is Fontana 12mo. The Book of Common Prayer is Emerald 32mo. The Bible has a gift inscription inked on the first blank page, dated 1948, otherwise both volumes are in near fine condition without obvious flaws. Presented in a strong card golden box - which the publishers call a casket, with internal fittings and silk lever and tag. Also inside the box is a small ticket from the publisher indicating that this is casket no. 4 of a limited series. The box is marked and a little worn both internally and externally, gently rubbed on edges, with a few chips on edges. Beautiful set which would make an excellent gift or family pass-down. Reverend Richard Mant was a English clergyman who notable wrote numerous works of religious history. Highly ranking in the church Mant became was appointed Bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore. Bound in a quarter reverse calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. This work has been prepared and arranged by Reverend Richard Mant alongside Reverend George D'Oyly. Reverend George D'Oyly was a cleric, academic and theologian. Among his most notable literary works include this collaboration with Richard Mant. Published under the direction of The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. In a half reverse calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally worn, with heavy rubbing and bumping to the spine and extremities. Heavy loss to the extremities of the front and rear boards. The front and rear boards of volume I are detached but present. Crack to the front and rear joints of The Book of Common Prayer, the front and rear joints of volume I and to the rear joints of volume III and IV. Age toning to the fore edge of each volume.
