Large 8vo. 9.75 x 6.25 inches. xx + 438 pp. Bound in later maroon buckram, gilt, preserving early morocco spine label, gilt. Fly leaves browned, a few small ink stains and occasional light spotting of margins and a small number of the plates; otherwise a very good copy. Earlier ownership stamp on front pastedown and below pictorial bookplate of David Bellamy with facsimile signature. Illustrated by 60 hand coloured lithograph plates printed by Hullmandel and by tables. A detailed account of an early ecological experiment by Scottish gardener and horticulturist, George Sinclair (1786-1834). Working as gardener to the Duke of Bedford at the Woburn Abbey estate, Sinclair assessed the nutritional value of various grasses as animal fodder by comparing their water-soluble constituents. It has recently been determined that these experiments influenced the research of Charles Darwin. The first folio edition of 1816 contained actual dried specimens of grasses, substituted here in the second edition by sixty plates, hand coloured in this copy.
