Howard who fought in the Civil War, headed the Freedmen's Bureau, and fought in the Indian Wars of the West negotiating a peace treaty with Cochise in 1872. Later he fought against the Nez Perce which resulted eventually in the surrender of Chief Joseph in 1877. Front cover taped repaired at spine with chipping along spine edge; small label, 1" x 1", at top corner of front cover; previous owner's stamp at top of front cover; spine is chipped with parts missing.
