The enteroviruses cause between 10 and 15 million symptomatic infections in the U.S. each year, ranging in severity from the common cold to overwhelming neonatal sepsis and death. The enteroviruses are leading causes of meningitis, encephalitis, poliomyelitis, myocarditis, and nonspecific febrile illnesses of newborns and young infants. Enteroviruses have also been implicated in the etiology of chronic diseases such as inflammatory myositis, diabetes mellitus, dilated cardiomyopathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and post- poliomyelitis muscular atrophy.

Human Enterovirus Infections is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art review of both the basic science and clinical manifestations of infections with the polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and numbered enteroviruses. Written by today's leading scientific and clinical authorities in the field of human enterovirus infections, this text contains the latest information needed by researchers and clinicians alike. The three parts of the book are tightly integrated to allow the reader to, for example, easily move from the molecular aspects of enteroviral replication to the host immune response and on to the resulting illness, its diagnosis, and therapy. Within this single volume is compiled a wealth of new and historical information essential for the virologist, infectious disease clinician, pediatrician, or internist who deals with the research or clinical issues surrounding human enterovirus infections.
