A Yokohama tourist trade photograph album which probably dates to the late 1890s. Lacquer over wood boards on the front and back containing 50 hand-colored albumen photographs. The covers measure 5 3/4 x 7 3/4 in (15 x 19.7 cm) while the individual photographs measure approximately 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 (9 x 13.6 cm). The front cover has a hand painted scene of a man and a woman with a lake and Mt Fuji in the background. The faces and hats of both the man and the woman are a white ivory (or ivory appearing) inlay. The back cover has a very subdued flower with and leaves pattern. The albumen photographs are tipped to thick card stock. Many have captions in the negative. The album is configured in accordion style. The first set of photographs open out in a continuous series from front to back. The second set of 25 photographs opens out from back to front (on the obverse of the mat with the first set. The first set of 25 photographs is focused on scenes but not temples or shrines. There are many views of Yokohama, Nagasaki, Kyoto and the Inland Sea. The second set of 25 photographs focuses on women. There is a "home bathing" scene in this set. The album carries no information as to the source/photographer or studio. ~ Condition. The boards have light scratching, rubs, nicks and damage along the edge. They remain solid and have a satisfactory overall appearance. The accordion folds has been repaired in two spots with modern archival linen tape. The photographs are in Very Good condition with some fading and minor blemishes or faults.
