Titel: Hand in Hand: A Tribute to Israeli Standard ...
Über diesen Titel
What does it mean to be wife of ? Diplomatic wives present the face of a country to the people of the state to which their husbands are accredited. Freda L. Paltiel credits those who are not formally accredited. She tells the stories of fifteen remarkable women who served their country and cemented the ties between Israel and Canada, while sharing a life with their diplomat husbands and families. While their husbands manage the flow of communications between states, the wives greet the public and host the diplomatic functions that present a window on their country. They do more, much more. Through their energy, their taste, their intellect and cultural sophistication they enhance the profile of the country that they too, represent. Hand in Hand is a story of partnership: those of wives and their husbands and between Israel and the Jewish Community in Canada. These women were shapers of modern Israel in its diversity, bearing witness to its triumphs and tragedies, as wives, as mothers and as significant social actors in their own right. Despite obstacles and career interruptions they distinguish themselves in their chosen professions and despite long absences from home, they contribute substantially to the building of civil society. In her Introduction, and through the fabric of the lives narrated, Paltiel examines the public and private face of women in Israel's search for peace and social justice. Professor Irwin Cotler, M.P. contributes an illuminating Preface highlighting the links between Canada and Israel. Paltiel devotes 50+ pages to highlighting key historical events between Canada and Israel from 1901-current.About the Author:
