HARMONICS OF THE SPHERES builds on the work of the great 20th-century astrologer, Dane Rudhyar, taking a further step towards a more unified understanding of astrology. Rudhyar realised that when a celestial cycle unfolds in synchrony with a cycle of change in the functioning of terrestrial wholes, what is unfolding is a cycle of being – a cycle of changing emphasis between multiplicity and unity. This book shows that any pattern of changing meaning that unfolds a whole number of times during each unfoldment of a celestial cycle (the element cycle, for example) is a higher harmonic unfoldment of the cycle of being. CHAPTER 1 describes the frames of reference that astrologers use to chart celestial motions, including clarification on topics on which astrology books that deal with celestial motions tend to be vague or even contradict one another. CHAPTER 2 explores the principles of polarity, cyclicity, wholeness, multiplicity and unity, and the relevance of these principles to astrology. This chapter also gives an account of the themes of the hemicycles and quarters of the cycle of being, as they arise within the psyche of the individual. CHAPTER 3 discusses the way harmonics are currently used in astrological interpretation and research, including the use of higher harmonic charts, modulus strips and graphic ephemerides. CHAPTER 4 defines and explains the proposed ‘harmonic model of segmentation’, which is a way of accounting for the way meaning changes from one stage to the next during the unfoldment of a celestial cycle. Examples are given to show that each way of dividing a cycle into stages brings certain harmonics into focus while excluding others from consideration. For example, the harmonics that are brought into focus by the twelve-fold division include the 3rd and 4th harmonics, as evidenced by the element and mode cycles, respectively. Chapter 4 also discusses how the proposed model may help astrologers to understand aspects and to interpret the harmonic fluctuations that show up in the results of astrological research. CHAPTERS 5 through 8 discuss the meanings in psychological astrology of four different types of celestial cycles: the zodiacal cycle (including discussion of the difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs), diurnal cycle, synodic cycle and direct-retrograde cycle. These chapters discuss the commonly used divisions of these cycles and show how the proposed harmonic model of segmentation can be used to account for, and clarify, the empirically observed meanings of the stages of these divisions. Also discussed is the way each higher harmonic unfoldment of the cycle of being is imbued with the quality of the number of the harmonic. The latter part of Chapter 5 sheds light on the role of the gunas in determining the meanings of the nakshatras. It is shown that the guna cycles that unfold at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels during the nakshatra cycle are, 1st, 3rd and 9th harmonic unfoldments, respectively, of the cycle of being. CHAPTER 9 attempts to identify the underlying principles that govern which trend within a celestial cycle corresponds to increasing emphasis on multiplicity and which corresponds to increasing emphasis on unity. OTHER TOPICS covered in the book include: the question of which pivotal points of the synodic cycle are points of equilibrium and which are poles (and thus how the synodic cycle correlates with the zodiacal and seasonal cycles); the significance of the transit of the galactic centre through the tropical zodiac by virtue of the precession of the equinoxes; and the importance of using astrology as a tool for true healing, rather than a means of replacing old egoic goals with new ones.
