Christie's, New York, 1998; three volumes, being Part I for18 March (The Middle Ages and the Renaissance), Part II for 15 and 16 June (The Age of Reason), and Part III (The Modern Age) for the conclusion of the sale on 29 October 1998; 4to, 215 x 270mm; pp 256, 460 and 404, listing 1,384 lots in total; profusely illustrated throughout with many illustrations in colour; blue boards with front cover title page illustrations; sheets giving the sale results for Part II loosely inserted into that volume; in very good, near fine, condition throughout and an extremely useful reference work particularly to the many rare items listed but also more widely. . . . The appendixes are a bibliography and concordances between the catalogues of the collection and the sale items. Norman, from Lynn, MA, established a private psychoanalysis practice in San Franciso and was a noted collector of books on science and medicine. A catalogue of his collection was published in 1991 by the San Francisco antiquarian bookseller, Jeremy F Norman. A copy of the preface to that work, titled "My Education as a Bibliophile", can be found online including, for instance, on Jeremy Norman's "HistoryOfScience" site. In 1995 Haskell Norman published "One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine". . . .
