A collection of seven loose issues. Tabloid newspapers. Folios (13" x 19"). Each issue consists of eight letterpress pages printed in five columns, with the same subscriber's small paper label affixed above the illustrated masthead. Removed from a bound volume with some leaves partially split or separated along the spine, the third issue lacks the final leaf, else very good overall with light foxing and some light dampstaining on the final four issues. All seven issues feature an original article or a correspondent's long letter of recollections about Nathaniel Hawthorne's early years and childhood home in Raymond, Maine. Included are excerpts from Hawthorne's early notebooks and a fragment of an early poem. Born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1816 Hawthorne and his family moved to a home built specifically for them by Hawthorne's uncles Richard and Robert Manning in Raymond near Sebago Lake. Years later, Hawthorne recalled: "Those were delightful days, for that part of the country was wild then, with only scattered clearings, and nine tenths of it primeval woods." A unique gathering of seven well-chosen and well preserved issues relating to Hawthorne's life in Maine, published in Maine's leading "Independent family Journal of Literature, Science, News, &c." A list of all seven issues follows: 1. June 25, 1870. [8pp.]: "Hawthorne's Home in Maine" (p. 100). 2. July 23, 1870. [8pp.] "A Curious Fragment, of a poem written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in his early youth - A Mournful Song" (p. 133). 3.
