Healing Criminal Justice is the story of the rediscovery of the healing power of community within the criminal justice system. The book chronicles Judge Jeffrey Tauber’s experience as one of the nation's first drug court judges and leader of the drug court movement at a time when it struggled to change an unjust system from within, and how the nascent drug court field was transformed into the most important criminal justice reform in a century.Judge Tauber recalls his visits to native cultures worldwide as well as his experience as a saxman playing in Oakland's blues clubs, and how both contributed to his understanding of the most critical element in the criminal justice system: community. He lays out his vision of a future where society, recoiling from its overindulgence in imprisonment, returns to its historic reliance on community as the key to controlling criminal behavior.Judge Jeffrey Tauber is the founding president and president emeritus of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP). He is currently the Director of Reentry Court Solutions, an educational initiative that maintains an archival website for the industry, and provides technical assistance, training, speaking, and consulting services to the field.
Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: Jeffrey Tauber has been a criminal defense attorney and a judge. He has also been a world traveler, with a sociologist's eye, and the sensibilities of a blues musician frequenting the clubs of Oakland California. Judge Tauber was the founding president of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals and is currently president emeritus. He has been a pioneer in the development of court-based rehabilitation systems, spearheading the development and growth of drug courts and other problem-solving courts across the United States. In Healing Criminal Justice, Judge Tauber paints a picture of how community can impact our conception of crime, criminals, and drug offenders in particular. He points to his own development as a musician and traveler as an important preset to his understanding of the vital role of community in the criminal justice system. Finally, he lays out his vision of a future where problem-solving courts based on the successful drug court model, reshape the court system, how the courts and judges see their role, and how society can return to a reliance on community, rather than an over-reliance on imprisonment as the greatest of crime fighters. Judge Tauber has written extensively on court-ordered rehabilitation systems and drug policy, including the first drug court manual published in the nation, Drug Courts: A Judicial Manual.
