This textbook is a hands-on guide to counseling clients with a variety of health problems (AIDS, chronic diseases, STDs, athletic injuries, etc.) The book utilizes Allen Ivey's Microskills counseling model, which breaks counseling into discrete skills that can be mastered and applied easily.

Richard Blonna EdD CHES has a bachelor's degree in Psychology from William Paterson (1973), a Master's Degree from Seton Hall University in Education (1976; specialization in Counseling) and an Ed.D from Temple University in Health Education (1986; specialization in Health Counseling). Dr Blonna is a full professor in the Department of Community Health at William Paterson University in Wayne NJ. He has been teaching health counseling, stress management, human sexuality and epidemiology at William Paterson University since 1986Dr. Blonna worked for 15 years for the New Jersey State Department of Health. While employed by the NJSDH, Dr. Blonna worked in the Sexually Transmitted Disease Control Program, AIDS Program, and Family Planning Programs as a field worker, supervisor, councelor, health educator, and health education consultant. In addition to Health Counseling; A MicroSkills Approach Dr. Blonna has written four other textbooks; Coping With Stress in a Changing World, Healthy Sexuality, and Readings and WebLinks in Human Sexuality.
Dr. Watter earned his doctorate from New York University and completed post-doctoral training at the Institute for Rational-Emotive Therapy in New York City. He is licensed as both a psychologist and a marriage counselor. In addition to his private practice, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, a Clinical Instructor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women's Health at UMDNJ-NJ Medical School, and an adjunct Professor of Psychology at both Seton Hall and Fairleigh Dickinson Universities. He is also a member of the medical staff at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. A former consulting editor for the JOURNAL OF SEX EDUCATION AND THERAPY, and the author of several professional articles, Dr. Watter is board certified in both sex therapy and behavioral medicine. He is a member of several professional organizations including The American Psychological Association; The New Jersey Psychological Association; The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists; The Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy; The Society for Sex Therapy and Research; The Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers; The International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health; The North American Society of Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology; and the Morris County Psychological Association.
