La Henriade is an epic poem of 1723 written by the French Enlightenment writer and philosopher Voltaire. Armorial bookplate shows a natural leopard on a crown, followed by three birds on a shield. This poem was written in honour of the life of Henry IV of France. It is in ten cantos and is divided in two parts. The first part is from an historical point of view, the second draws more from Voltaire's imagination. In a full calf binding with faded gilt stamping to spine. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to spine and joints. Loss to spine label. Small patches of lighter rubbing to the boards. Tidemark to rear board at joint due to damp staining. Prior owner's armorial booklate to front pastedown. Prize inscription to recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Good.
