A uniformly bound collection of the works of 'Heptameron' by Marguerite, Queen of Navarre. Illustrated throughout. Complete in five volumes. 'The Heptameron' is a collection of seventy-two short stories, with the stories dealing with subjects such as infidelity, love, and lust, one story being based off the live of Marguerite de La Rocque. The stories were inspired by 'The Decameron' by Giovanni Boccaccio. Marguerite of Navarre intended to write one-hundred stories covering ten days, but her early death mean that she only completed up to the second story of the eighth day. Volume I illustrated with nine plates. Collated, complete. Volume II illustrated with eleven plates. Collated, complete. Volume III illustrated with twelve plates. Collated, complete. Volume IV illustrated with twenty plates. Collated, complete. Volume V illustrated with twenty-two plates. Collated, complete. This translation is from the authentic text of Monsieur le Roux de Lincy. The illustrations are reproductions from the copper plates engraved for the Berne edition by Longeuil, Halbou, and other artists. Marguerite de Navarre was the Queen of Navarre, and was an ancestor of the Bourbon Kings of France. Navarre was a prominent figure during the French Renaissance, being an author and a patron of humanists and reformers. With an essay on 'The Heptameron' by George Saintsbury. Saintsbury was a literary historian and critic, as well as being well known as a wine connoisseur. Bookplates to the front pastedown, with one pasted on top of the other. The one visible belongs to Philip Beaumont Frere. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Exeter Library. In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Lost to the head of the spines, heavier to Volume IV. Light rubbing to the raised bands, joints, and to the extremities. Front hinge and joint of Volume I are starting but firm. Front joints and hinges of Volume II are starting but firm. Front joint of Volume III is starting but firm. Front joint and hinge of Volume IV are starting but firm. Hinges and joints of Volume V are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good.
