The website "TextBook History" note that the book became a bestseller on its publication in 1939, noting it as " . an excellent layperson?s primer on the state-of-the-art in human genetics and heredity, and a serious critique of the racist, nativist and even anti-homosexual sentiments common among early eugenics supporters." This is important because Scheinfeld acknowledges the importance of the study of human inheritance while disassociating himself from the views on eugenics expressed by hard-line proponents, including those who he felt misapplied the science to express support for fascist views of humanity.
