This is a richly illustrated, antique copy of "HIMALAYAN JOURNALS - or, Notes of a Naturalist in Bengal, the Sikkim and Nepal Himalayas, the Khasia Mountains, &c." by Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker. 1893; Ward, Lock & Bowden; London. There are 13 full-page plates, dozens of in-text illustrations, and 2 folding maps (both are securely attached at the back). The book is dedicated to Charles Darwin. "Himalayan Journals" chronicles Hooker's expeditions through the Himalayan region between 1847 and 1851. A significant work in botanical exploration and travel literature, it combines scientific observations of the flora, fauna, geology, and geography of the Himalayas with personal narrative and descriptions of encounters with local cultures. Hooker meticulously records plant species and their characteristics, providing valuable insights into the botanical diversity of the region. The book also sheds light on the challenges and realities of exploration in the 19th century. Condition: Clean covers and spine. Bright gilt lettering on the spine. Sharp cover corners. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end paper and pastedown resulting in the front cover being a bit shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. The two folding maps at the back are securely attached. Map 1 is creased at the outer edge with a few small tears from not being folded properly. Map 2 is in terrific shape. The text pages are in excellent condition - clean with only a bit of light foxing at the top of the title page, and tiny foxing spots at the outer edge of pages 119-124.
