Beschreibung
Illustrated. 69 pages, plus 4 unnumbered pages of diagrams and 'descriptive notes' on the diagrams. Cover title: "Hints on Golf". Divided into four sections: Introductory; Advice to Beginners; Hints to Golfers of Riper Years; and The Miseries of Golf. "Hints on the Game of Golf" is a significant book in the library of golf for two primary reasons. It is the first book written by Horace Hutchinson, a monumental figure in golf both for his playing prowess and his writing ability. Notably, Hutchinson was the first English Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, St. Andrews. He won the Amateur Championship in 1886 and 1887 and finished in the top ten three times in the Open Championship. He authored more than a dozen golf books, countless golf articles, and dozens of books on a wide variety of subjects. Most importantly, this is the first book of golf instruction offered for public sale, the scant earlier writings on the matter having been printed for private distribution. It is approximately the twentieth book on golf published. The publisher, William Blackwood, was a friend of Hutchinson, and it is thought by bibliophiles that the first edition production run was most likely limited to 1000 copies or less. The need and success of this book can be inferred by its long production run of fourteen editions including several revisions over twenty years. In a self-deprecating manner, Hutchinson would later write in his autobiography "The only excuse to be made for it is that it was a very little one." Published one year after the first edition, this third edition is the most important after the first, as the second was unchanged and the third added for the first time Hutchinson's famous "stick figure" illustrations. The cover illustration and cover title has also changed for this third edition and both will remain the same for the eleven editions to follow. Hutchinson wrote a new Preface for the third edition. This in light blue cloth with only slight soiling to the rear. A beautiful tight, bright copy with no former owner bookplate, name, notes, marginalia, underlining, soiling or the like. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 200835
