Etching with hand coloring. Signed in pencil at lower right. Image measures 4 x 5.75". Folded sheet measures 6.5 x 10". This charming little original print by New York artist Clara Tice features a mother and baby hippopotamus. Made in circa 1921, the image features a mother hippopotamus colored in black resting near a flower, with the baby hippo lying on top of the mother. Tice's careful linework and beautifully colored surroundings helps convey the pairs bodies in their restful pose. The print is in very good condition, has 2 pin holes and some toning. Textured edges from original thick paper. Signed by artist in pencil. Clara Tice (1888-1973) was an American illustrator and artist who lived in Greenwich Village during a time of avant-garde artistic activity. Although somewhat well-known for her erotic drawings and prints of nudes, as well as her bohemian lifestyle, she remains relatively obscure within art history more generally. This image from her mother and baby series from later in her life speak to her personal passion for animals. Her book "ABC Dogs" was likely inspired by the many dogs she owned and cared for throughout her lifetime. This delightful print provides insight into the artist's personality.
