Beschreibung
Volume one and two of a five volume history of Charles V. The first edition. Only volume one and two of a five volume set. Handsomely bound in a green morocco binding. A detailed history of Charles V king of France from 1338-1380. His reign marked a significant turning point in the Hundred Years War when French armies recovered much of its lost territory held by England. Charles V is seen as culturally significant with French history.During his reign Charles V faced a significant amount of opposition and threat. He became regent of France when his father John II was captured. During this period he faced considerable amount of hostility from the nobility which was further exacerbated with Jacquerie's peasant revolt. When he became king in 1364 he managed with the help of others to replenish the Royal treasures and restore the House of Valois. These two volumes explore Charles V ascending to the thrown and his first few years as king. Each volume includes a frontispiece illustrating one aspect of Charles V's life. Volume one includes a folding map showing the Bataile De Poitiers. Bound in a quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally very smart. Fading to the spines. Rubbing to the tail of the spine resulting in loss. Internally firmly bound. Spotting to the first and last pages but pages generally bright and clean. Marginal age toning. Both frontispiece's clean. The folding map in volume one clean with marginal age toning. Pencil annotation to the front free endpaper. Very Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 877V42
