Beschreibung
The 1780 edition of this famous history of Spain in a rather attractive blindstamped binding and in near fine condition. Direct from the library at Newton Hall, the 18th century country house and estate, seat of the Widdrington family in Northumberland, with a pencil shelfmark to the front free-endpaper and the armorial bookplate for S. E. Widdrington. Bound in leather with gilt lettering and blindstamped decoration. Complete in Two Volumes. Juan de Mariana, 1536 1624, was a Spanish Jesuit priest, historian, and member of the Monarchomachs. Mariana's Historia is justly esteemed for its research, accuracy, sagacity and style. Samuel Edward Widdrington (formerly Cook), 1787 - 1856, was an English writer. Having served as a Captain in the Royal Navy, he lived for some years in Spain. He served as High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1854. He was a fellow of the Royal Society, and the Royal Geographical Society. By royal license he assumed the name Widdrington, and purchased the moiety in 1842. He inherited the Newton Hall estate from his father, Joseph Cook. In a full calf binding. There is only some mild wear to the extremities, with just some mild rubbing and edge wear. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. The pages are very slightly age toned. Just the odd light spots. Near Fine. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers EXP2-G-3
