In as-is condition. Binding copies. A great and important candidate for professional restoration. All front boards are detached and flaking. Volume II-IV rear boards are attached but fragile. Moderate wear to boards, prime to flaking. Spines nearly perished and quite worn. All labels nearly gone expect for numerical morroco labels on Vols. I-II. Antiquarian ex-library stickers on bottom compartments. A stamp dated 1908 on contents pages, no other evidence of ex-library stickers or labels. Bookplate of Penn State Architecture professor Maurice Roberts Des Marais on pastedown. All fly leaves are detached. Early signature of William Hunter on title pages. Toned throughout with numerous instances of age stain and foxing. Quite stained. Bindings remain intact. Please see photos. First American edition, preceded by a London edition the previous year. The plates include views of : the Falls of St. Anthony in the River Mississippi; Ohiopyle Falls in Pennsylvania; Mammoth bones; a Plan of Lystra in Nelson County Kentucky; a plan of Franklinville in Mason County, Kentucky; a Tobacco Plant, and plates of a Llama and Tapir; Buffalo and Buffalo trap; American Elk and Bison; Wolverine, Beaver, Otter, and Raccoon; Jaguar, Cougar, Ocelot, and Lynx; Cahiai, Paca, Marmot and Coasse; Twelve-banded Armadillo and Brazilian Porcupine; 2 plates of Monkeys; a Baltimore Oriole; a Hooping Crane; an Avoset; an Alligator; and 2 plates of Snakes. Winterbotham wrote this celebrated account of the United States while in Newgate Prison where he was serving a sentence for sedition after preaching two sermons on the 5th and 18th of November 1792. "In the first, on the double anniversary of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot and the revolution of 1688, he made reference to the French Revolution and to contemporary abuses, as he saw it, of the contract between king and people. This aroused local feeling, and a prosecution was talked of. In an attempt to put matters right he preached the second sermon, but on 25 and 26 July 1793 he was tried at the Exeter assizes for both sermons, and found guilty".
