Volume I: History of Ancient Jerusalem, 192 pp., frontispiece engraving / Volume II: Modern Jerusalem, 192 pp., original embossed cloth, faded and rubbed round edges, small marginal blotch on page 7, otherwise copy in general good condition, no date [1846-1847]. John Kitto (1804 - 1854) was trained for employment by the Church Missionary Society in 1824 as a printer at one of their foreign presses. In June 1827 he was sent by the society to Malta. In 1829 he became a member of a private mission-party to Persia and an interesting account of the journey appears in his ?Journals?. In 1835 a ?Biblical Commentary?, which resulted in ?The Pictorial Bible? was originally published anonymously in monthly parts. This work relates a complete history of Jerusalem from its origin through the time of Christ.
