There is an objective discussion of methods of licensing and control, and of the economic and political background of bus operators. But this is the story of men and women as well as motor vehicles; of shrewd pioneers, international financiers, trade unionists and well-known politicians. Not least it is the story of the crews on the buses, for who the industry is not just a living but a way of life. The book is fully illustrated with photographs, charts and maps.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: John Hibbs is Emeritus Professor of Transport Management for the Business School of the University of Central England Birmingham, and is a well known writer and lecturer on a variety of transport subjects. Before turning to an academic career he worked for two bus companies and also for British Rail. John is also the author of The Country Bus, also published by David & Charles, which like all his work, reflects a deep concern for the industry that has given him his career. Professor Hibbs lives in Erdington, Birmingham.
