Three volumes folio, fine and very handsome contemporary full mid-brown morocco by Charles Lewis of Duke Street, London [Lewis was born in London in 1786, the fourth son of Johann Ludwig, a political refugee from Hanover. In 1800 he was apprenticed to the leading bookbinder Henry Walther. After spending five years in the forwarding department Lewis sought but was refused promotion to the finishing shop; undaunted Lewis began to practise finishing work at home. After leaving Walther, Lewis worked as a journeyman in several other shops, eventually setting up a business in Scotland Yard, later to premises in Denmark Court, and finally to Duke Street, St. James's. With C. Kalthoeber he was employed by William Beckford on the Fonthill Abbey library. Thomas Frognall Dibdin was an admirer of his work and character, and recommended him to other bibliophiles.Lewis died in 1836.] The boards with gilt triple fillet about edges, gilt panelled with triple fillet, broad floral roll and teeth, elaborate floral corners, the spine with blind ruled raised bands, the compartments panelled with large and elaborate gilt floral centres and corners, lettered and numbered direct in two compartments, board edges gilt ruled, inner dentelles, green endpapers, all edges gilt. VOLUME 1: portrait frontispiece, 15 engraved plates (one a map of Chester; a few plates have 2 images); double-page hand-coloured county map; some 138 text illustrations (107 are hand-coloured), many of which are armorials and seals; 3 decorated initials, some 64 pedigrees; half-title, title, dedication leaf, liv, 556pp. VOLUME 2: some 143 text illustrations (of which some 113 are hand-coloured), 3 decorated initials, 128 pedigrees, 15 plates including a hand-coloured map of Delamere Forest and a superb double-page hand-coloured plate, heightened with gold, of the glass in Farndon Church (a few plates have 2 images), half-title, title, 472pp. VOLUME 3: some 183 text illustrations (of which 154 are hand-coloured) 3 decorated initials, 16 plates including a hand-coloured plate of the stained glass from Brereton Hall ( a few plates have 2 images), numerous pedigrees, half-title, title, 470pp. Upper board vol 3 scratched; some foxing, especially to plates; some offsetting of plates to text. Staniland (Booksellers) was established in 1972. We occupy a small shop in the centre of a pretty market town in England's smallest county. We have two public rooms and stock antiquarian and modern books, mostly literature, philosophy, music, history, classics, architecture, applied arts, theology and topography. We have a good range of library sets in cloth and leather and, occasionally, fine bindings. We are members of the P.B.F.A., the largest booksellers' organisation in the U.K. The shop is usually open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; appointments to view out of hours can almost always be made at a customer's convenience. Please telephone before setting out if you are travelling far as I cannot always get cover if attending an auction. We are always pleased to receive offers of books for sale.
