[Late Antiquity] FINE PRIZE BINDING. Complete in eight volumes. Octavo (23 x 15 x 27cm). With a frontispiece etching of the author to volume I, and one or two folding maps to each volume. In contemporary tan full calf for Winchester College, with raised bands, gilt titles to twin black labels, further gilt decoration to spines, and the college arms stamped in gilt to boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. Crisp, clean copies, with a tobacco scent. Some wear to joints and binding extremities, but all holding firm. Very good. Published sequentially in six volumes between 1776 and 1788, Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall' is universally acknowledged as an historiographical and literary giant of the English language. It has been read by historians of Rome and Byzantium ever since publication, though Gibbon's pessimistic attitude is currently unfashionable amongst scholars of Late Antiquity. Nevertheless, the breadth of his coverage and the depth of his knowledge remains unrivalled. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 68538
