Buchbeschreibung T. Cadell & etc., London, 1830. Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. 7th ed. This is a ten-volume set that includes both Hume's "History of England" as well as Smollett's "continuation" of Hume's History. They were all issued by T. Cadell & etc. publishers in 1830 and are uniform in size and format. David Hume (1711 - 1776) was a Scottish historian, economist, philosopher and essayist; his "History of England" was published between 1754 and 1762 and was both an influential and popular work until the end of the 19th century. Tobias Smollett (1721 - 1771) was a Scottish author and poet who also authored the present work. Hume's "History of England" left off at the revolution; Smollett continued the history from the Revolution to the death of George II. This Hume's contribution comprises the first 6 volumes and Smollett's, 4 volumes. "A new edition with author's last corrections and improvements, to which is prefixed a short Account of his life, written by himself." Originally this set was finely bound in tree calf with gilt decorated spine compartments, raised bands, leather spine labels, decorated edges and interior turn downs. All edges are gilt, and end papers are marbled. Now, the spines and covers are in poor condition. The spines deteriorated or missing, and one volume lacks the rear cover. The first blank flyleaf and marbled end paper in vol. 3 has a horizontal tear. The contents of these volumes are tight and they are also nearly free of foxing (with the exception of the title page and frontis portraits and blank front end papers in the first volumes of each author's work). The title pages of the other volumes are mostly free of foxing. There is a previous owner's bookplate inside the front cover of each volume, else no other markings in or on the books. The original bindings of all ten volumes is uniform, but given the condition, this set is obviously a candidate for rebinding. Please contact us if you would like more information!; 2 Frontis Portraits; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 18705
