Uniformly bound in full calf, with beautiful gilt detail, by F. Bedford. With twenty-five engraved plates throughout the set. Collated complete. The portrait of, 'Suwarroff' in volume five, is on page 46, not 117 as stated in the list of plates. Archibald Alison's renowned 'History of Europe', from the start of the French Revolution to the restoration of the House of Bourbon in 1815. This multi-volume set is considered to be the first English language study of the French Revolution, and it's success led to numerous editions. Sir Archibald Alison, 1st Baronet, was a Scottish advocate and historian. His brother was the notable Scottish physician and social reformer, William Alison. Alison's other published works include, 'Principles of the Criminal Law of Scotland', and, 'The Military Life of John, Duke of Marlborough'. The half title pages are present in each volume. Uniformly bound in full calf by F. Bedford. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the edges. Fading to the spines. Light marks to the boards. Staining to the boards of volumes five, six and seven. The rear hinge in volume three is starting, alongside the front hinge in volumes one, five and twelve and both hinges in volume six. All remain very firm. Small mark to the upper front paste-down and free endpaper of volume six. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned to the edges but very bright and clean. Light offsetting to the title pages, caused by the frontispieces. The odd spot towards the front and rear of the volumes, and odd handling mark to the title pages. The occasional light spotting to the plates. Light marks to the edge of the frontispiece in volumes two, seven and eight. Some stains to the frontispiece in volume five, with two small marks to the plate on page 46. Staining to the plate on page 654 of volume six. Cockling towards the front and rear of volume six.
