From dj flap: "Only Mr. Patrick Chalmers could have ridden at the stiff fence of 'The History of Hunting' and cleared the obstacle so well. The book is a digest of the great sport as taken from the earliest records onwards, enlivened by his own humor and his own verses. The book is so full of queer information that it is difficult to know what to quote." - Punch. "The History of Hunting would have been for many writers a loveless task of dates & facts; Mr. Chalmers has made of it an apparently effortless triumph. His pen trips merrily across the 384 pages of the book, slipping from humor to verse, and from verse to a prose distinguished by its fine poetic feeling. These many centuries and modes of hunting are presented in a form which is so interesting and so delightfully written that the reader may be gulled into un-mindfulness of the onerous and lengthy research work which Mr. Chalmers must have undertaken before embarking on this book. "A rich feast of information and entertainment of which the Lonsdale Library has every reason to be proud." - Sunday Times. Chapters include: A Prelude to History/ In a Classical Beginning/ Semi-Historical/ Early English/ The Norman Influence/ The Forest Laws/ When Twici Carried the Horn/ Medieval/ Dame Juliana/ Sir Henry Dryden's Notes on Twici's Art of Hunting/ Sir Henry Dryden's Notes Continued, Hound and Horn/ The Tudors/ The Stuarts/ Georgian Days and Victorian Times.
