This is the third octavo edition, with 120 hand colored plates produced by J. T. Bowen whose lithographs were used in all four of the first octavo editions. Leather is a bit rubbed and scuffed along edges, mostly lower, and show a few scuffs and light rubbing on joints. Corners are a little worn. The fourth octavo edition of McKenney and Hall's classic work, after the first octavo edition of 1848-50 and the sumptuous large folio format produced in 1836-44. The plates for the first four octavo editions were all produced by the same lithographer, J.T. Bowen, and retain the high quality of printing and coloring of the plates found in the first edition. McKenney, the superintendent of Indian Affairs, and James Hall, the famous Cincinnati author, joined forces to create the Indian Gallery in the 1830s. Hall supplied the text, while the Indian Bureau commissioned artist Charles Bird King to paint portraits of the leading Indian chiefs, either from life or by repainting the earlier, cruder attempts of James Otto Lewis. The result was a spectacular series of images, certainly the best series of such portraits to be produced. A classic Americanum, increasingly hard to find in nice condition. HOWES M129. SABIN 43410a. BENNETT, p.79 (ref). FIELD 992. REESE, BEST OF THE WEST 68 (ref). Three volumes. [2],iv,3-333; xvii,9-290; iv,17-392 pp., plus 120 handcolored lithographic plates. Large octavo. Publisher's brown morocco, covers elaborately blocked in blind, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth, the others ruled in blind with repeat decoration of a simple leaf tool, a.e.g. Very light wear to corners, joints, and spine ends. Older ownership inscription on front pastedown of each volume. Scattered soiling, light tanning, an occasional light fox mark. Very good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 55790

Zustand: Very good. J. T. Bowen (ca. 1801 1856) (illustrator). Third Edition. Three volumes, 8vo, 10 ½ x 7 inches (266 x 178 mm). Vol. 1: pp. iv, 333, 40 portraits; Vol. 2: pp. v, 319, 50 portraits; Vol. 3: pp. 339, 31 portraits. Red morocco binding, gilt fillets and elaborate floral and dart decorations on the covers, 5 raised bands, gilt titling and decorations in compartments, all edges gilt, hinges professionally repaired, shelf worn, some spotting and foxing, tissue guards on most plates. FEATURING 120 HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHS BY J.T. BOWEN [Howes M129; Sabin: 43411]. As early as 1824, the practice was begun of taking portraits of the principal Indians who came to Washington, and depositing them in the War Department. They were chiefly painted by Mr. King, an artist of high repute, who had been remarkably successful in transferring to his canvas the strong lineaments of the Indian countenance. Col. McKinney, who was for many years superintendent of Indian affairs at Washington, and was thus brought into constant association with the principal men of the nations and tribes which sent representatives to the seat of government. McKenney conceived the plan of making this rare and curious collection more valuable to the world by publishing a series of engraved portraits exactly copied and colored from these paintings. A biographical sketch of the individual accompanies each portrait whom it is intended to represent, interspersed with anecdotes and narrations. The work also contains an historical account of the various Indian tribes within the borders of the United States. In this edition the plates are on a reduced scale from the folio edition by Biddle issued between 1836 and 1844. The lithographic plates are based on paintings by Charles Bird King, whom the War Department commissioned to do portraits of tribal delegates visiting Washington. These exquisite portraits became the core of the Department's Indian Gallery. An 1865 fire at the Smithsonian destroyed most of King's paintings. Thus the superb color versions in this work constitute the only existing likenesses of some of the most significant 19th-Century Native American leaders. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 37

Zustand: Very good. McKenney , Thomas L. and James Hall (illustrator). 3 vols., folio. 120 hand-colored lithographed plates after Charles Bird King, Karl Bodmer, J. O. Lewis, P. Rhindesbacher and R. M. Sully, drawn on stone by A. Newsam, A Hoffy, Ralph Trembley, Henry Dacre and others, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen and others, 17 pp of lithographic facsimiles of signatures of subscribers, 2 lithographed maps and one table printed on the recto of one leaf, wrappers of original parts bound in; occasional foxing and offsetting, generally not affecting plates. Half calf, cloth sides; covers detached, worn.First edition of one of the centuryâs key color plate books, with first issue of volume 1(with the Biddle imprint and date 1836 on title). Most of these superb lithographs are based on oils by Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegations visiting Washington D. C. Most of Kingâs original portraits were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian in 1865, so their appearance in McKenney and Hallâs Indian Tribes is the only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century: Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Cornplanter, and Osceola were numbered among Kingâs sitters.Thomas McKenney was the first director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and he provided biographies, many based on personal interviews, that accompany the portraits. After six years as Superintendent of Indian Trade, McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the Native Americans for profit, and his vocal warnings about their future prompted his appointment by President Monroe to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. As first director, McKenney was to improve the administration of Indian programs in various government offices, His first trip was during the summer of 1826 to the Lake Superior area for a treaty with the Chippewa, opening mineral rights on their land in 1827. When President Jackson dismissed his from his government post in 1839, McKenney was able to turn more of his attention to his publishing project, Within a few years he was joined by James Hall, the Illinois journalist, lawyer, state treasurer and from 1833 Cincinnati banker, who had written extensively about the west. Both authors, not unlike George Catlin, whom they tried to enlist in their own publishing enterprise, saw their work as means of preserving an accurate visual record of a rapidly disappearing culture. The text, which was written by Hall based on information supplied by McKenney, takes the form of a series of biographies of leading figures among the Indian nations, followed by a general history of the North American Indians.âWith 120 folio plates in three volumes, this was the greatest color plate book issued in the United States up to the time of its publication, and one of the most important of the century. Its long and checkered publication history spanned twelve years and involved multiple lithographers (mainly Peter S. Duval and James T. Bowen) and publishers, but the final product is one of the most distinctive and important books in Americanai â¦.The complicated circumstances of its production have left a bibliographical stew of issues and issue points that are yet to be satisfactorily resolvedâ (Reese, Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books, 24).Although History of the Indian Tribes of North America was eventually hugely successful and often reprinted in both folio and octavo formats, the first edition appeared haltingly, as is shown by the changing imprints on the title-pages. Four publishers, three lithographic firms, and more than a decade were required to bring this first edition to completion.References: BAL 6934; Field 992; Howes 129; Sabin 43410a.
