Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. 5th or later Edition. Antiquarian pictorial binding - no date but circa 1884. With a colour frontispiece. ***Very good in grey decorative boards, with gilt blocked titles to the spine and front board. The boards are clean and unmarked, with just some light wear to the cloth, mainly at the head and tail of the spine. Corners very slightly creased. Internally very good, with largely clean pages - just a few light marks. No foxing. With a prize bookplate affixed to the front pastedown, from the Montrose Academy, dated 1886-7. There is also a small bookseller's label 'R. R. Balfour, Montrose' also on the front pastedown. Spine tight, although the hinge is slightly weak between the Contents page and first page of text. Pages 77-80 slightly torn with loss at the top corners due to rough opening of the pages. No inscriptions, but interestingly a previous owner has corrected the title to Chapter XII. from "On Board a Whaler" to "On Board a Boat". Small closed tear to the margin of the last page, not affecting th text. No dustwrapper issued. 176mm x 126mm. 123 pages. ***Contents: Chapter I. The Cragsby Lifeboat, II. A Brigantine in Trouble, III. Wrecks on Hellgate Sands, IV. Rescue from a Madeira Brig, V. Wreck of a French Schooner, VI. Wrecks off the "Smals", VII. Billingsgate and the Dutch, VIII. Tom Siderfin's Boat, IX. A Spanish Brig ashore, X. The Crew of the Snow, XI. Wreck of the "Parsee", XII. On Board a Whaler, XIII. Blowing Great Guns, XIV. A Letter from the Sea, XV. Gaps North and South, The Rescue from the Earl of Eldon. ***'On the 24th of August 1834, I embarked on board the Ship "Earl of Eldon", of 600 tons, commanded by Captain Theaker, at Bombay, with a view of returning to my native land on furlough. She was the finest and strongest ship in the trade, and any insurance might have been had on the chances of her successfully resisting the winds and waves; but who can foresee their fate, even for a day? ***On the third day of our boat navigation, the change of the moon approaching, the weather began to wear a threatening aspect; but as we were in the trade, we did not apprehend foul or contrary winds. In the course of the night it blew fresh, with rain; we were totally without shelter, and the sea dashing its spray over us, drenched us, and spoiled a great part of our biscuit, though we happily did not discover this until we were nearly out of the want of it.' [Quote taken from "The Rescue from the Earl of Eldon".] ***'Earl of Eldon was launched at Whitby in 1830 but registered in London. Her master was Captain E. Theaker and her owner was J. Barry. She first appeared in Lloyd's Register in 1830; in 1831 her trade was London-India. Spontaneous combustion that occurred in the cargo resulted in her destruction in 1834 in the Indian Ocean about 1,000 nautical miles from Rodrigues Island at 10°S 77°E. Earl of Eldon departed Bombay on 24 Aug 1834, bound for London with many passengers and a cargo of cotton. Her cargo had been loaded into the ship's hold in a damp condition. What one passenger some time later believed was steam billowing from the hold, turned out to be smoke. Within the hour, the deck was ablaze and by mid-afternoon, the entire vessel was in flames. Forty-five men, women and children and the crew took to three ship's boats to make their escape. After they had rowed for an hour, Earl of Eldon's powder-magazine exploded, causing the ship to disintegrate spectacularly. On 10 Oct, after 13 days and a voyage of 450 miles at sea in open boats, all 45, including four women and an infant, arrived safely at Rodrigues. Lloyd's List reported on 20 Jan 1835 that Earl of Eldon had burnt at sea' [Wiki] ***A nice antiquarian edition, produced in attractive decorative boards, in very good condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 7586
