Undamaged modern brown marbled boards with leather corners and spines, the latter lined in gilt with five raised bands and green and black leather labels, lettered in gilt. Internally new endpapers. VOL 1: creased portrait frontis, frayed on lower edge. its inner margin reinforced with archival tape as is the grubby title page; the next, dedication page restored with slight loss to text; pp, (6), 436 + xcvi (index), (2); all plates and maps present as listed. VOL 2: frontis folding map browned and tender with 3 cm x 2 cm loss to one corner; lower edge of map of Bengal peaking out base of text block due to misfolding; a few pencil marks to slightly grubby title page; pp, (2), 365 + 1, (xv) (list) + (1). ll maps and plates as listed. VOL 3: minor repairs to folding frontis map; a 3 cm x 4 cm water mark in top left corner of title page affects all pages diminishing to non-existence by last pages; restoration to folding map of Madras; pp (2), 367-739, (xv) + (1); all plates as listed.
