Buchbeschreibung Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. [.] Chiefly Founded on Von Hammer. 8vo, hardback. 2 volumes. Vol. 1, 1854, pp. 413 + 12 additional pages comprising contents and introduction, and another page of advertisements. Vol. 2, 1856, pp. 548 + 10 additional pages of contents. Title page and preface each reference Von Hammer, believed to be leading historian Joseph Hammer von-Purgstall, author of the acclaimed 'History of the Ottoman Empire'. These volumes were subsequently conceived by Creasy as an homage to the works of Von Hammer, with the author drawing on the work of the earlier historian to present a more contemporary account of the Ottoman Turks. The volumes are complete and collated, with 6 maps and plates across the set. Volume 1 contains a map 'showing the former and present extent of the Ottoman Empire'; and plates demonstrating 'Siege of Constantinople by Mahomet ||', 'Siege of Vienna by Solyman |' and 'View of Malta in 1565'. Volume 2 includes two maps: 'Crimea and Northern Coast of Black Sea, and Sea of Azof' which faces the frontispiece, and 'Map of Asia Minor'. Also contains one plate showing 'Plan of Battle at St. Gothard'. Both volumes are lightly foxed, which is to be expected of books their age, but are mostly free from any notable damage to the interiors. The covers show natural signs of age, such as small marks and scuffs at the edges. This is especially true of volume 2, which has a mark and small tear at the top of its spine. Page edges also slightly darkened, but overall very good condition for books of their age. Contains lengthy appendix after the main body of text in volume 2. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 036242

Creasy, Sir E[dward] S[hepherd]

Buchbeschreibung Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Two octavo volumes. Complete with [xi]+413 pp, [vii]+548 pp. Includes 6 lithographic maps and plans (4 folding, 2 with partial colour) and a full page lithographed view of Malta. Uncommon in the original blindstamped textured red cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Slight chipping to the top and bottom of the spines, front hinge of the second volume beginning to crack, closed tears with no loss along the top fold of the frontispiece map of the Ottoman empire in the first volume. Otherwise very good. Creasy (1812-1878) was an English historian and jurist who finished his career as Chief Justice of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). His history of Ottoman Turkey was largely based on the ten volume work "Geschichte des Osmanischen Reiches" by the great Viennese orientalist, Baron Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, which was then unavailable in English. Buchbeschreibung 2 Volumes. 8vo. xi, [1], 413; vii, [1], 548. 6 lithographed map & plans (4 folding, 2 with partial colour) & 1 lithographed view of Malta. contemporary half chagrin (extremities rubbed, short split in 1 joint, short split in 1 map fold no loss). First Edition. Creasy s history is largely based on the great work of Joseph Von Hammer which was unavailable in English translation. In his preface Creasy lauds Von Hammer s work as one of the best productions of the first half of [the nineteenth] century, being based on numerous authorities and writers on Ottoman history, rich sources found in the archives of Venice, Austria, and other warring or friendly states, coupled with Von Hammer s long residence in the East and familiarity with Turkish customs and literature. "I have not made a mere abridgment of Von Hammer, but I have sought to write an independent work, for which his volumes have supplied me with the largest store of materials.".
