An early English translation of Madame d'Aulnoy's fairy tales. Comprising of six stories total, this work comes from the pen of the woman known for originating the term 'fairy tales' for this genre. Lacking the final leaf, which is the final page of the moral for 'The Orange-Tree' and the first four preliminary leaves. Comprising of 'The Tale of Graciosa and Prince Percinet', 'The Blew-Bird and Florina', 'Prince Avenant', 'The King of Peacocks', 'Prince Nonpariel', 'The Fair Indifferent; or the Hobgoblin and Furibon' and 'The Orange Tree'. Noted to the title page as being 'Dedicated to the Ladies of Great-Britain'. A very scarce work. This translation was first published in 1716, with a 1720 edition prior to this 1721 edition. ESTC No. N17861. Madame d'Aulnoy's tales are known for their conversational tone, which was a contrast to the Grimm Brothers' folk tales. Several of her tales feature animal brides and grooms and are regarded as tales for adults rather than children. In a full calf binding. Externally, worn Lacking the spine. Front board is detached but present. Prior owners' inscriptions to the front pastedown. Lacking endpapers. Final leaf is lacking. Rear hinge is tender.
