Adoniram Jndson, h. at Lndlow, Oct. 18. 1835: educated at Springfield Wesleyan Seminary. At the age of twenty-cne he started ont alone withont money or assistance to make a fortune. In 1836, in a corner of a machine shop at Saratoga Springs, he made his first set of tools for cutting stencil plates, and from that time engaged in the sale and manufacture of these tools, for which he secured a patent April 10, 1860. He established his headqnarters at Springfield, and began to advertise these tools as outfits for young men with which to canvass the country, cutting stencil plates for all kinds of marking. Two sets were manufactured; one of excellent workmanship sold for 825, and a cheaper set for 810. Orders soon began to come in for these tools. Thousands sent for them from all ...
