Beschreibung
Silver gelatin print on double weight, luster surface silver gelatin paper. Measures approximately 8.5 x 6.5 inches, including margins. Untoned with glossy surface. No copyright visible. Very good condition. Slight inward bend; minor creasing, especially to corners; faint scratching. Writing in pen and pencil on verso. Image is crisp. The provenance of this photograph is the Edward S. Curtis Gallery in McCloud, California. Edward Curtis (1868-1952) was an acclaimed photographer and ethnologist who undertook one of the most ambitious anthropological projects ever attempted. After participating in the 1899 Harriman expedition to Alaska, Curtis came up with his "Great Idea": to record the traditional culture and lifestyle of North America's indigenous inhabitants before those old ways disappeared. Between 1900 and 1930, Curtis traveled the continent and produced a 20-volume set of books that document the stories, languages, and rituals of over 80 tribes. This half-length portrait depicts a young Hopi woman with her hair styled in the iconic squash blossom whorls. Image appears in The North American Indian Vol. 12. Curtis' original caption reads, "Soft, regular features are characteristic of Hopi young women, and no small part of a mother's time is used to be devoted to dressing the hair of her unmarried daughters. The aboriginal style is rapidly being abandoned, and the native one-piece dress here illustrated is seldom seen even at the less advanced of the Hopi pueblos." Includes a certificate of authenticity from the Edward S. Curtis Gallery, dated 2016. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 024811
