Beschreibung
A collection of eight "Pass Books" (school ledger reports), each hand stitched in tan or blue thick paper wrappers, with Horace Congar's name in manuscript on the front covers. A few covers are also titled "Pass Book". All eight booklets are stitched together into a single volume. 12mo. (4" x 6 ½"). The front and back covers are rubbed, with a few small chips at the corners, else near fine. Each booklet contains between 10-14 weekly letterpress school ledger reports with Congar's course marks and associated notes completed in manuscript. Each report was reviewed and Signed by his father Samuel Hayes Congar. A visually appealing set of booklets with a nice artifactual feel, all presumably bound by the young student Horace, who must have been proud of his high marks in reading, spelling, arithmetic, book-keeping, and speaking. He died in 1849 at the tender age of 19. Horace was a member of a prominent Newark family. The family patriarch Samuel Conger (1753-1826) had served as a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. Horace's father Samuel Hayes Congar (1796-1872) was a coach painter by profession and antiquarian. He was appointed the first librarian of The New Jersey Historical Society in 1853 and served until his death in 1872. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 533770
