Beschreibung
Beautifully illustrated antique copy of "The Horkey - A Provincial Ballad" by Robert Bloomfield. 1882; Macmillan and Co.; London. The book features wonderful color illustrations on every page by GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. The name "horkey" was applied to end of harvest customs and celebrations, especially in the Eastern Counties of England. In the introduction to The Horkey, Bloomfield sets the scene."In Suffolk husbandry, the man who goes foremost through the harvest with the scythe or the sickle is honoured with the title of 'Lord,' and at the Horkey, or harvest home-feast, collects what he can for himself or brethren, from the farmers and visitors, to make a 'frolic' afterwards, called the 'largess spending'." Leaving the hall after the feast, they then shout "largess" so loudly that it it heard in all the farms around. Condition: Some very light soiling to the covers; wear to the corners (the tips of the boards are exposed). Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The inside of the book is in terrific condition - clean pages with only a couple random, light ink smudges found; no writing, tears or foxing found. Overall the book is in very good condition.
