Downing, Vol. III July 1848-June 1849, Published by Luther Tucker, Albany, 1848, 12 issues, 584 pp, original blind cloth, 9.5 x 7”, 4to. In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with heavier wear to joints and edges. Joints’ cloth splitting with tears and light loss. Spine ends worn with wear and slight loss. Modest soiling to surface of cloth. Front fly has a receipt for “cheap paint” literally held on by an old nail! A charming addition considering this is a work of cottage architecture. Interior lightly toned with consistent age staining and the occasional spot of dampness staining. Light foxing throughout. Binding remains tight and intact. Free of known markings. Please see photos. Illustrated with more than 100 black and white engravings and issue headings. Edited by landscape designers and Gothic Revival advocate Downing from 1846-1852, when at this death the magazine became The Gardener’s Monthly. Downing’s landscape work included designed the White House grounds and the Smithsonian Institute in D.C., influencing Frederick Law Olmsted and others. Includes information on cottage plans, a whole essay devoted to strawberries and seasonal floral musings. Beautiful.…
