"Hortulus Animae" - Hendrick Wouters, Antwerpen. 1584 edition. Bound in full leather over wooden boards, rebacked with the original boards retained. There is one partial metal clasp remaining and two partial leather straps (see photos). Four raised bands to spine and gilt detail and titles to spine. The original leather is pitted and surface scuffed/worn, with occasional chip. Corners chipped. Internally there are more recent endpapers to front and rear. The original endpapers are tatty/grubby, and the front has large ink inscription. One leaf is missing and has been supplied in 2 photocopies. Grubby and thumbed, with light browning. Occasional spots and marks. Outer page edges are bumped, thumbed, sit a little unevenly, with occasional creases and the odd nick and chip. A couple of leaves have repair to edges. Some of the woodcut illustrations are weak impressions. Printed in gothic type. Each leaf has woodcut border and there are numerous woodcuts within text. Title and calendar in red and black. Title page, 22 pages I-clxxxiii [missing clxxxiiii] clxxxv-cclvii [6 pages] 52 (of 54) woodcuts in text. Rare edition of the Dutch translation, of one of the most popular devotional works (first published in 1494). Published just before the Fall of Antwerp in 1585.
