Photographed by native Houstonian Jim Olive, "Houston 2000: People, Opportunity, Success" features more than 150 brilliantly lit photographs to chronicle every major segment of Houstons economy energy, health care, space, technology, trade, transportation, small business as well as the regions major attractions such as the Theater District, Museum District, Memorial Park, festivals, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and more.

Through its photographs, the book documents Houstons growth from its early days as a hub for cotton and oil at the beginning of the 20th century to its role today as the energy capital of the world, a health care colossus, and a major international center for trade. "Houston 2000: People, Opportunity, Success" also captures many of the technologies and industries that are driving Houston today and will likely play a big role in the future of the region.

Among the famous Houstonians featured in the book are former President George Bush; astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon (in front of the Apollo 17 spacecraft that flew him there); the legends of Houston medicine, Drs. Michael DeBakey and Denton Cooley; and rising technology stars like University of Houston scientist Dr. Paul Chu.

Native Houstonian Jim Olive has been photographing Houston for more than 30 years. His photos have captured the heart-pounding excitement of the U.S. space program during the Apollo flights and documented the life-saving heart procedures of Houstons pioneering cardiac surgeons. His photos of Houston and Houstonians have been published in Time, Life and numerous other national and international publications. Olives photo assignments have enabled him to cover the extraordinary tapestry of people, companies and organizations that have been the strength of Houstons growth and diversity. Reflecting Houstons international focus, for example, Olive has traveled on assignment to more than 62 countries to photograph Houston companies, their people and their products. An avid fisherman and conservationist, Jim has also used his photography to capture the natural beauty of the Houston region, from the sealife and birds in Galveston Bay to the forests and fauna north of Houston and to the bluebonnet-covered rolling hills west of Houston.

Ray Viator is an award-winning writer, editor and public relations professional with more than 20 years of experience working with Houston business leaders. Rays writing has been published in a number of local, national and trade publications and his photography has been published in several Houston business publications, newspapers and directories. Ray has been honored with more than two dozen awards for writing, publications and programs.
