This work was first published in three parts between 1663 and 1678.Corrected and amended 'with additions', present here are all three parts of the work. With title pages to parts II and III only. The first part lacks the title page, and so the variant (whether printed for Herringman or Sackett) is not specified. The second part, with pagination continuous from the first part, has the 1693 imprint of Chiswell, Sawbridge, Bentley, and Wells. The third part, with separate pagination, has the 1694 imprint of Thomas Horne. The poem tells the story of Sir Hudibras, a knight who is a fanatic for the Cromwellian cause, and his squire, Ralpho. The narrative follows their adventures as they try to impose their strict moral and religious values on the people around them, often with disastrous and comical results.Written in a mock-heroic style, Butler's poem is a critique of the Puritanism that was prevalent in England during the mid-seventeenth century.Rebound, with endpapers renewed.
