Beschreibung
An illustrated and nicely bound edition of Samuel Bulter's popular poem 'Hudibras', with notes by Zachary Grey. Complete in two volumes. 'Hudibras' is a long narrative poem which was published four years after Charles II was restored to the throne. The poem follows the knight Sir Hudibras, who is lauded with much abusrb praise, and it a satirical poem, directed against religious sectarianism. Written by Samuel Butler. Butler is best known for this work, which was very popular when it was first published, being reprinted many times in Butler's life. With annotations and a preface by Zachary Grey, who was an editor, priest, and controversialist. With a frontispiece to Volume I, and seven plates. Volume II with five plates. Collated, incomplete, as lacking plates three, nine, and fourteen. In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Some light rubbing to the spines. A couple of light marks to the boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front free endpaper of Volume I, 'To our beloved Vicar, with grateful thanks in memory of Hilary, from Leila & Marjory, Nov 27th 1920'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper of Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with scattered spots. Very Good Indeed.
